Hospi Bike Ride a Success for Sick Kids

On Sunday 15th March, nearly 300 people from throughout the Wellington Region took to their bikes in support of Wellington Children’s Hospital - with some cyclists travelling from as far as Napier and New Plymouth especially for the event.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who supported and participated in this first ever Wellington Hospital to Hospital Charity Bike Ride!

The HOSPI Charity Bike Ride was a year in the making and we were very excited to see it come into fruition!

Cyclists of all ages rode in the ride with the oldest, pictured below, being 79 year old Arnold, and he wasn't last!  Cyclists of all skill levels also took part with the fastest time over the 50km distance being 1hour 24minutes, the longest time being 3hours 47minutes.

For individual Times and Photos please visit www.hospibikeride.co.nz.

Hosted by our mascot HOSPI the Hospital Lion, participants, supporters and patients at the finish line were delighted to meet HOSPI in person – with each cyclist taking home a HOSPI of their own. Some cyclists found very interesting places for their HOSPI to rest:

Starting at Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua, the ride passed through much of Wellington – Tawa, Churton Park, Johnsonville, Makara, Karori, Northland, Aro Valley, Brooklyn, Happy Valley, Owhiro Bay, Island Bay and Newtown – to reach the finish at the new Wellington Hospital.

We have had fantastic feedback about the event from participants and Volunteer Marshals who are all very pleased to be involved in a bike ride for such a good cause.  Thank you to everyone who sent in wonderful compliments about the Traffic Management and Safety aspects of the event.  We are very pleased that there were only a few small spills but there were no major incidents and EVERY cyclist finish the entire ride!

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to all of our Volunteers and Sponsors - without your support this event could not have happened!!  We look forward to working with you on the next HOSPI Bike Ride!

We were also very fortunate to work with Eddie Bright from Cyclosport, who did a brilliant job pulling the whole bike ride together.  Eddie’s experience in the cycling field has been invaluable and his can-do attitude combined with his focus on safety, ensures HOSPI 2010 will run even smoother.
